2008 Election Summary

Election Day 2008 is less than four months away, and campaigns are gearing up for the fall campaign season. While most focus will be on the Presidential election, there are also thirty-five races in the U.S. Senate, as well as all 435 seats of the House of Representatives.

Of the thirty-five Senate races, there are ten that we expect to be extremely competitive and too close to call at this time, including races in Alaska, Colorado, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina and Oregon. Currently, the U.S. Senate is comprised of 48 Democrats, 48 Republicans, and 2 Independents who caucus with the Democrats. Democrats hope to expand their majority by winning seats being vacated by retiring Republican Senators, most specifically in Virginia, New Mexico and Colorado.

In the House of Representatives, thirty-two members have announced their retirement and the Democratic Party seems poised to increase their majority gained in the 2006 election cycle.

Finally, eleven states will hold gubernatorial election in November. These are: Delaware, Indiana, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington and West Virginia.
