State Program Assists with Medical School Debt

January 15 Deadline for Ohio Physician Loan Repayment Program

Through the Ohio Physician Loan Repayment Program (OPLRP) primary care physicians who agree to practice in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) or former HPSA for 40 hours weekly receive up to $80,000 of medical school debt repaid.

Participating physicians must also agree to treat a percentage of Medicaid and Medicare patients equal to the percentage in their service area. The initial contract is for two years of service, then a follow-up contract of either one two-year contract or two one-year contracts. The repayment is paid over four years.

Physicians in Pediatrics, OB/GYN, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, or Psychiatry are eligible.

The deadline for this application cycle is January 15, 2008.
