Ohio Legislator Introduces Price Transparency Bill

The proposed legislation requires physicians to provide detailed cost estimates to patients for medical procedures that are scheduled at least seven days in advance or are subject to prior authorization. Emergency services would be exempted. The bill requires health care providers to offer a good-faith estimate, which may be stated within a price range. The estimate may be written, oral or electronic and must include whether the provider is out of network with the patient’s plan.

OOA Offers New Prescription Discount Card

The OOA Board of Trustees has approved offering a discount card which helps patients find the lowest cost option for prescriptions while requiring no financial commitment on the part of the participant or the OOA. This new partnership with RxCut will offer Ohio patients access to prescription medications at 50 to 87 percent rate reductions.

OOA Signs Letter on Medical Board's Monitoring Program

The Medical Board is proposing to create a non-disciplinary, confidential monitoring program that allows licensees with mental or physical illnesses, (excluding substance use disorders) to be monitored by the Medical Board without being subjected to formal public disciplinary action. While the physician association coalition commends the Board for creating a non-disciplinary process, it still has concerns about how the program will operate and maintain confidentiality.

New Incentives to Promote the Use of Electronic Prescribing, or E-Prescribing

Beginning in 2009, and during the four years that follow, Medicare will provide incentive payments to eligible professionals who are successful electronic prescribers as defined by the Medicare Improvement for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA). Eligible professionals will receive 2% incentive payments in 2009 and 2010; 1% incentive payments in 2011 and 2012; and a 0.5% incentive payment in 2013.
